Waldorf Education is an education for our time which is based on a spiritual understanding of human beings and their place in the universe. It makes profound demands on the intellectual, artistic and moral capacities of the teacher. Waldorf Teacher Education is an education towards responsibility, freedom and human dignity. Through the understanding of the stages of child and adult development, studies in evolution of consciousness, artistic practices, and through self-examination and critique, the prospective teacher begins to develop the capacities necessary to work within the classroom.

The Waldorf Institute of Southeastern Michigan, formerly the Waldorf Institute of the Great Lakes (WIGL), founded in 1991, offers courses in anthroposophical studies, artistic work and Waldorf education courses for prospective elementary and early childhood teachers. We also offer general Adult Education courses for those interested in deepening their study of the arts and Anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner's philosophy of creative idealism.

We hope that this web site will give you an introduction to the programs and courses that the Waldorf Institute of Southeastern Michigan has to offer you. We encourage you to follow up by contacting us to start a conversation about whether Waldorf Education is for you.

From 9-12 and 2-5 each day

Phenomenological teaching methods for 6th-8th grade science, using examples from the human biology, chemistry, and astronomy from the Waldorf curriculum will be the focus of this workshop.  Each day will consist of three 90-minute sessions, one session focusing on the phenomenological method, and two sessions focusing on experiments.  Practical suggestions for reviewing experiments and designing assignments will be discussed.

The workshop presenter, Gary Banks, holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in Aerospace Engineering Sciences.  He worked for Boeing Aerospace before becoming a Waldorf class teacher and Waldorf High School Science teacher.  He currently teaches chemistry, biology, earth science, mathematics, and chorus at the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor.  He is also a faculty member of the Teaching Sensible Science program sponsored by SENSRI and the Waldorf Education Research Project.
